Week 7: Meetings and Special Guests

Welcome Back Everyone!

This week for our meetings professionalizing history topic we had a guest speaker. Jessica Robkin gave us her time to talk about the public history field and all the jobs it encompasses and what these jobs look for when hiring. Her advice to us was her emphasis on how important it is to keep a desktop version of a cv and resume and update it often. She also went over her education and how important it was for her to have had experience with her degree versus just leaving college with her degree and no formal skills. Her big recommendations are to go out there with our time and to get your hands on everything with experience. She also gave some of her time to talk about what pay is like and was very candid about what employers were paying despite degrees and experience.

Aside from this wonderful experience with Jessica Robkin, This week I had a chance to do a mid term one-on-one with one of my team members. Being in a leadership position will never not be difficult for me. This semester seemed a little off center for me both personally and academically so it's been a bit of a challenge trying to manage and create plans for myself and team members. The game plan I've come up with should keep us occupied for the semester, and I am excited to see how the team grows. My personal work has been creating an abstract with the Michael Gormalley interview folder. I am currently in the process of editing the abstract and once this is complete I shall move onto the actual transcription process. I ended up pivoting from my goals from last week which was to do my transcription first, however it made more sense to do the abstract first. I will also be checking to see if there is any more processing work that is available in the vent that team VHP powers though everything too quickly.

Week 6: History Center Field Trip

 Welcome Back Everybody!  As per the title suggests this week we had our field trip to the Orlando Regional History Center. We had a chance to talk to Jeremy Hileman the Assistant Curator and Cheyenne Stastyshyn the Public Programming Coordinator. We spoke with them about the varying functions of the museum what their day to day tasks look like and, even a deeper dive into the specifics of their job. I had no clue that part of curator duties was to also do oral history interviews. The Veterans History Project's main goal is to preserve the stories and oral histories of veterans. It was incredibly interesting to know that there is also a job function in museums that deals with this specific responsibility. Week 12: Sending out Files and Story Day 2026!

 Welcome back everyone! This week's meeting covered everyones updates. At this point in time I have been working with my fellow interns on their folders and providing  guidance where I have been able to. So far we are still waiting to send out the batch for my completed veteran folder. We will be physically handing him a copy at the Story Day coming up on the 18th of April. As for future work I will be starting on organization of another folder before the semester comes to an end. Once story day comes around I will be taking charge on the scanning station to ensure that folder are set up for next semesters team. One of the biggest struggles of this semester has been not being able to find documents. Especially when there are so many hands working  on similar documents. I am hoping that by working on organization during the event, before anymore work is done it will minimize mistakes or the likelihood of items being misplaced.  Until Next Time!

Week 13: Story Day Plans and Showcase Planning

 Welcome back!      This Wednesday has been quite productive. During the meeting today we were able to flesh out the semifinal plans for the VHP Story Day that will be taking place on the 18th of April at the Beardall Senior Center. I have also completed my plans for manning the scanning station for the event. While actually being able to archive transcripts and other documents is important the most important step in the process is making sure that you actually have full access to the documents obtained during the oral interview process.  My hope is that future organization and transcription efforts will be made easier and more streamline so that we can hope to achieve more archived folders over the course of these short semesters. Sometime before story day I will be meeting with the team to talk about our plans for the showcase.
